Step by step

How renting works

  1. 1

    Reserve before you arrive

Book online or by phone with your dates and where you're staying. In peak season this is the difference between having bikes and going without.

  2. 2

    Pick delivery or store pickup

Most visitors choose delivery — the shop drops the bikes at your villa or resort. Prefer to grab them yourself? Choose a shop with a storefront near you.

  3. 3

    Ride all week

Bikes are yours for the whole rental. Hilton Head's flat, shaded, and laced with 60+ miles of leisure paths — it's one of the easiest places anywhere to get around on two wheels.

  4. 4

They pick up when you leave

With delivery, the shop collects the bikes at the end of your stay — nothing to load up or return. Store pickups get dropped back at the shop.

Pick your ride

Choosing your bikes

Match the bikes to your group. Not sure? Cruisers suit almost everyone on the island's flat paths.

Beach cruisers

The classic Hilton Head rental — single-speed, comfy, perfect for the flat island paths. The cheapest and most popular choice.

Kids' bikes & trailers

Sizes for toddlers to teens, plus trailers and tag-alongs to tow the little ones. Reserve early — kids' sizes go first.

Hybrids & multi-speed

A bit more gearing and reach for longer rides or taller riders. A small step up from a cruiser.

E-bikes

Pedal-assist for effortless miles — the premium option. Note: not allowed in every community (see below).

Tandems & adult trikes

Ride together, or a stable three-wheeler for an easy, balanced cruise. Specialty stock is limited, so book ahead.

Mistakes to avoid

The little things that trip visitors up — sidestep them all.

Waiting until you get here

Summer and holiday weeks sell out. Walk-up availability is a gamble — reserve a week or two ahead, especially for kids' bikes and e-bikes.

Guessing on kids' sizes

Bring your kids' heights (or ages) when you book so the shop sends the right sizes and any trailers or tag-alongs. Wrong sizes ruin the first ride.

Booking an e-bike for the wrong area

E-bikes aren't permitted in Sea Pines, Shipyard Plantation, Hilton Head Plantation. If you're staying there, rent a standard cruiser or hybrid instead.

Forgetting the gate details

Staying in a gated community? Give the shop your full property address and any guest-pass info so delivery isn't turned away at the gate.

Questions visitors always ask

I ordered delivery — when will my bikes arrive?

Your bikes will be there for your stay, but an exact drop-off time usually can't be promised on arrival day. Every shop is delivering bikes all over the island to everyone checking in that same day — the logistics are real. Plan for some flexibility on day one rather than building your first afternoon around a delivery hour, and the same goes for pickup on departure day. Ask your shop for their typical delivery window and how it affects your rate and return time.

Is it really important to make a reservation?

Yes — strongly recommended. Hilton Head is a very popular destination, and bikes get reserved out, especially in peak weeks. Show up without a reservation and you risk the bikes being gone, or getting stuck with poor terms: pickup-only instead of delivery, on-call pickup, or having to return early. A reservation locks in the bikes, the delivery, and your dates so it doesn't scramble your vacation.

Should I just bring my own bikes instead of renting?

You can bring your own — but for beach and island cruising, a rental is usually the smarter call. Rental cruisers are built to take the salt and sand that come with riding here. Your own bike will get sandy and salty, and that corrosion is a headache you'll be dealing with back home. Let the rental take the beating.
